Naomh
Olaf 2-8 Kevins 2-6
After
many years of trying Naomh Olaf hurlers finally reached Senior
League status. It was achieved after a thrilling win over
Kevins in the Top 4 playoff final in O'Toole Park on Sunday
10th November.
A late two-point salvo from ace free-taker Sean Gibbons earned
Olafs the spoils. The sides were locked at 2-6 apiece after
58 minutes of this entertaining clash before Gibbons maintained
his composure to score twice from placed balls to earn a deserved
win. It was however a win that Olaf's made hard work of.
Olafs opened up a three-point lead as early as the seventh
minute when Kevin Keane found the net. Olafs continued to
dictate proceedings thereafter, but seemed incapable of reflecting
their dominance and didn't score again until Gibbons pointed
on 24 minutes. They finally opened up a commanding lead within
a minute when Kevin Keane claimed his second goal after a
brilliant solo run to leave the scores 2-2 to 0-2. Both sides
swapped points before the break to leave the half time score
2-4 to 0-4
The game turned on its head in the opening eight minutes if
the second period as Kevins claimed a brace of goals to leave
Kevins just the minimum in arrears 2-5 to 2-4.
Buoyed by those scores Kevins piled on the pressure and moved
2-6 to 2-5 ahead with 10 minutes remaining. That was to be
their last score, however, and Patrick Birmingham levelled
proceedings with a fine score on 50 minutes as Olafs began
to assume control again.
They went on to claim the victory their superior play merited,
as Sean Gibbons held his nerve to split the uprights twice
and hand his side a two point win.
